The pressures look different. The tensions are the same.

This is something that regularly surprises people when they join our cross-sector programmes and sit alongside senior leaders from very different worlds.

In a recent conversation, three leaders described very different realities:
– a public-sector chief spoke about political scrutiny
– a corporate COO described investor pressure and
– a purpose-led founder talked about funding constraints and the risk of mission drift.

Different systems. Different incentives. Different constraints.

And yet the underlying tension was strikingly similar:
How do you sustain collective leadership when external pressure pushes leaders back into their own silos?

Strategy rarely collapses because of poor thinking. It erodes when candour diminishes under pressure – particularly if it was fragile to begin with.
What cross-sector dialogue does, powerfully, is make those patterns visible.
In sector-bound conversations, it’s easy to assume your challenges are unique.

When you hear the same dynamics reflected back at you from different contexts, blind spots surface. And once you see the pattern, you can choose how to respond to it.

That is where leadership maturity begins.
